My Favorite Baby Stuff

10 Jun

Now that I’ve been a Mom for 10 weeks!!! I have some pretty strong opinions on baby stuff, including what the must haves really are. Spoiler alert: I definitely missed out on some crucial items when I created my baby registry.

Misconceptions I had regarding baby stuff:

The crib is the #1 thing to have! The crib must be ready before the baby comes!

Reality: My baby spends like 30 minutes a day in her crib (napping if I’m lucky). Newborns will want to co-sleep, be in a bassinet, and will basically sleep anywhere that is not a crib.

A newborn won’t care about toys. See this couch cushion, toy! This plastic cup, toy!

Reality: Babies like to look at things, especially things overhead. I didn’t register for a real activity mat, which now feels like a big mistake. We recently got one that doubles as a ball pit and now it’s fun time, anytime! Also, I no longer have to spend hours holding toys above my baby’s head.

There’s no way I’m turning my living room into a Babies R’ Us. My living room will remain posh and adult like.

Reality: Yes, my baby likes the classy Baby Bjorn bouncer that looks like a piece of Euro furniture, but she likes the used Fisher Price ‘Snugga Bunny’ rocker even more…. It’s totally OK to have baby stuff in the living room all the time. Also, babies like things that look like they’re made for babies vs. adults.

Baby wearing… not sure if I’ll do it… seems a little hippy-ish.

Reality: Baby wearing has been a life saver and overall is just a sweet fun thing to do. The $18 Balboa Baby Sling I found at Ross is used every day and lets me clean, write, exercise, and snuggle (on the go!). I only wish I would have found this sooner.

I’ll just buy medical stuff once the baby arrives.

Reality: While you can do this for some items, you’ll want to have a thermometer, diaper rash cream, lotion, etc. before the baby arrives vs. when you need it. No one wants to stress about buying a thermometer when you think your baby has a fever. I got the Kinsa and it’s really slick, but it takes time to set up. Give yourself that time.

I won’t register for any baby clothes because people will give me baby clothes anyways.

Reality: While this is somewhat true, I realized we were definitely lacking newborn sized clothes. A lot of clothes gifted to us were larger and sometimes not for the right season. Also, I learned quickly that I hated doing all the little snaps a million times per day for diaper changes. The zipper body suits were really the newborn clothes I wanted. In the early days, I definitely wanted function over fashion. Now that I have more experience being a Mom and am getting more sleep, I can handle the 3 piece outfits 😉

Looking forward to seeing what future must have items I’ll discover!

Happy 2014 from meganlol!

It’s officially 2014, WHOA! Hmm…I sure haven’t posted in a long time so I figure it’s time to do a big 2013 recap. I don’t think I made a formal goals list for 2013, but I did do a lot of very cool things. Here is the stuff that made the list of my highlights of 2013 in no particular order:

  • Finally made it back to Japan! I had wanted to go back since I was there in 2000 and especially wanted to bring my husband there. The trip did not disappoint! (I also went to California and Arizona)
  • Learned some new recipes and have been cooking less things that come from boxes….kinda. I made really yummy potato pancakes last week and am looking forward to making more. I also learned that I want to eat potato pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If I learned even how to cook one new food item per year, this will be a success.
  • Saw my game launch at work and got a promotion. I’ve officially been in the video game industry for 2 years which although short still feels like an important milestone.
  • Got LASIK which has been amazing. I had been wanting to do this for awhile and can’t believe I finally did it. I will do a whole other blog post dedicated to this. Seeing without glasses or contacts though is pure magic.
  • Found a haircut I actually like and want to stick with! I have been searching for the perfect haircut and hairdresser for the past 10 years. I think I finally found both.
  • Attended so many amazing family events and parties and friends houses. These are always my favorite memories.
  • Planted a garden. My sunflowers grew super tall and later withered. I didn’t manage to get any of my veggies to grow though. It was cool.

I hope 2014 brings as much fun as 2013 did!

PAX 2013

I haven’t done a blog post for quite some time so I figured I better update everyone about PAX 2013! It was definitely a lot of fun, but not as fun as last year’s. It somehow felt smaller: there weren’t as many games to play, not as much good swag, and I wasn’t interested in any of the panels this year. I didn’t even get to really see a PS4 or Xbox One in person, just the controllers.

PAX highlights for me included:

  • PopCap booth with PvZ 2 and Peggle 2!
  • Capcom store was amazing with so much Sanrio x Street Fighter (the line was super long though!!)
  • Hatsune Miku booth with the most energetic Hatsune Miku cosplay gals you’ve ever seen (they never stopped dancing); game was fun too
  • The entire indie games section although it was packed
  • Oculus Rift
  • I got a very cute Raccoon plush (y.com mascot??)

Looking forward to PAX 2014 with the hope of more playable games and more games that I really want to play.

Emerald City Comicon 2013

This was the strangest thing I saw at ECCC. Did not purchase, but had to get a pic :)

This was the strangest thing I saw at ECCC. Did not purchase, but had to get a pic

This was the first time my husband and I went to Emerald City Comicon and it was really fun. It was definitely not as crazy as PAX, but there were still a ton of people. There was also a lot less standing in line compared to PAX although we didn’t get autographs or go to any of the panels. My favorite part of ECCC was just checking out all the amazing art items for sale. So much amazing art talent all in one place! I ended up purchasing a handmade push square watermelon. My husband found one of his favorite artists too and got a signed print.
All our goodies!

All our goodies!

This was a fun new experience that I definitely want to try again. It was so awesome running into so many friends there too. I’m already looking forward to next year’s. Who knows, I might even dress up 🙂

Review: Street Fighter x Sanrio Fight Stick

28 Feb

If you were reading my blog in December you should remember that I became the proud owner of a Street Fighter x Sanrio fight stick. Well, I finally took the plunge and took it out of the box and started gaming with it. Here are my thoughts below:

  • Having a fight stick pretty much makes any game more fun! I’ve been playing through Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game and it feels like I’m at an arcade! Games instantly become x100 more fun.
  • Having a fight stick makes fighting games easier to play (unsurprisingly). In particular for me, Street Fighter 4 has become much more playable. I don’t get those annoying hand cramps that always happen with mad button mashing on the Xbox controller.
  • Just like anything it takes practice and dedication to get good at fighting games (even with a fight stick). My goal is to get good enough at Street Fighter 4 to play co-workers without them needing to use a huge life handicap.
  • Lastly, the fight stick looks so very pretty in our gaming area. I’m proud to show it off!

Overall, the fight stick was a great investment and anyone interested in getting serious about fighting games should consider getting one.

Valentine’s Day Wreath!

2 Feb

Valentine's Day Wreath!

I love Valentine’s day. I love it mainly because of the cute decorations (pink and red hearts!)… and flowers… I’m all about those.

This wreath was super easy to make; 1) Chop off faux flowers from stem 2) Hot glue to wreath accordingly 3) Add ribbon 4) Hang on door

Next Holiday Wreath I want to make: Chinese New Year

Birchbox January 2013

24 Jan

ImageI received my very first Birchbox today!

Me: “My Birchbox arrived, yayyy!”

Husband: “Is there wood inside?”

For $10 a month you get a nice box of beauty samples, sometimes even full size items! It’s a fun surprise and you can cancel at any time. Here’s what was inside mine:

The best item was by far the full size Model Co. lip gloss in ‘showgirl red’. It’s very sheer and looks great. I also love the little mirror on it. I’m excited about the No 4 clarifying shampoo and the mini Caudalie radiance cream also seems promising. The rest of the samples are nice too, but I really prefer real packaging to the funky little flat plastic magazine sample styled items.

Looking forward to my next Birchbox already!
